Katy Roberts is an artist based in Dallas, Texas.

I was a teacher for 35 years in both Oklahoma and New York, I taught English literature and composition, and for two years, (early in my career) I was asked to also teach civics, reading, and art.  Why civics?  My husband was a lawyer—at least that is the only reason I can come up with.  Why reading?  Well, my Masters Degree was in reading education. But, why ART? My close friend was the art teacher, and when she didn’t want to do a project for the school for free, I volunteered because drawing, sketching, and a little bit of painting was easy and fun for me.  But when my friend left the school and moved to Montana, I suddenly was the choice to teach art. ??? I had no training in art education.  In college (University of Oklahoma), I had taken two elective classes in the art department during my senior year—abstract painting and ceramics—even though I feared that I would get caught because at that time, only students who were majoring in Art could take art classes. I did get caught after the second course, and my teachers wanted me to change my major to Art, but I was about to graduate, so noooooo, that was not going to happen.

While I taught (and loved) English literature and composition, I did things outside the classroom to satisfy my desire to piddle in art—advertising, photography, costuming, and set design for dramas and musicals. At home, I doodled when not grading, wife-ing, mothering or befriending.  Finally, after retiring from teaching in NY and moving to Dallas, I had time to create, to play, to learn.  I actually thought I would write during retirement and become a modern day Margaret Mitchell with a one book wonder. But I also wanted to learn to paint, officially, and doing both, writing and painting, demanded more hours in the day than I had. So, I chose to focus on painting. I wanted the knowledge that fine art majors had.  I wanted to work in different mediums and study masters’ paintings and learn about the evolution of the art.  And, so, for the most part I am self taught in painting, but I have studied with two amazing artists in Dallas — Michael Tole (MichaelTole.com) and Mary Tomas (MaryTomasGallery.com). Both artists have made indelible impressions on my understanding and view of color, technique, and painting, in general.  Michael Tole is now located in Arizona and Mary Tomas now lives in Tennessee.

The person upon whom I most rely for knowledge and tips is my daughter, artist Marlowe Monfort Hermanvoski. (MarloweMonfort-Hermanovski.com) Her talent and work has always been inspirational to me. Her comments, tips, and evaluations are beyond valuable. And she is only a phone call and five miles away!  Please check out all three artists’ websites. You will see why I am so grateful for their knowledge and insights.

For the past 7 or 8 years, I have had a wonderful friend who supports my artistic efforts,  the owner of Momos Pasta and Momos Bistro restaurants, Hoss Gnomi.  He has graciously allowed me to show and sell my paintings through his restaurant, Momos Pasta at 11910 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75230.  (Also, amazing food!)

If you have any questions about the works in the Collections or their prices, please fill out the project inquiry form, and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Thank you for visiting and exploring this website.
